Cannes 2026 Celebrates Global Creativity with Short Films and La Cinef Innovations

The upcoming edition of the festival is generating great anticipation with fresh details about the chosen short films and innovative projects set to compete in the La Cinef category at Cannes in 2026.

Two weeks ago, the festival’s organizers unveiled the complete lineup for the event. This year, as part of the 79th edition scheduled from May 12 to May 23, films from the Official Selection and additional screenings were announced. In addition, a striking official poster featuring Thelma and Louise was revealed, and two extra categories have now disclosed their selected works.

The Short Films category features a curated selection of productions from around the world:

  • 10 films have been chosen, each with a maximum duration of 15 minutes.
  • The entries include a diverse range of productions and co-productions from 136 countries.
  • The award for this category will be revealed Amid the concluding festivities on May 23.

Meanwhile, the La Cinef category, which spotlights projects from global film schools, has selected a total of 19 entries. Out of 2,750 submissions, 14 live-action projects and five animated works have been chosen. These projects, directed by 12 women and 9 men, bring together innovative storytelling from four continents and 15 different countries. The awards for this category will be presented on May 21 at a special ceremony hosted at the Buñuel Theatre in Cannes, followed by a screening of the winning projects.

The final round of selections in the La Cinef category highlights emerging talent and creative ideas celebrated within the framework of European cinema.
